# Race & Ethnicity Codes

> Race and ethnicity classification codes

## Overview

Race and ethnicity are captured in separate fields. Race is a multi-value field (clients may identify with multiple races), while ethnicity is a single value capturing Hispanic/Latino origin.

## Usage Notes

> [!NOTE]
>
> Race and ethnicity are separate concepts. A client who identifies as Hispanic or Latino may be of any race.

### Best Practices

1. **Ask about ethnicity first** -- this allows respondents to self-identify as Hispanic/Latino before selecting race
2. **Allow multiple race selections** -- do not force single-race selection
3. **Use "Declined" appropriately** -- when client explicitly declines to answer
4. **Use "Asked but unknown" sparingly** -- when the question was asked but the client does not know
