# DIS - Discharge

> Treatment episode discharge records

## Overview

The DISCHARGE schema captures information about the end of a treatment episode. A discharge record closes an open admission and allows for outcome tracking. Each admission can have at most one discharge record.

> **Legal Status / Service Identifier cross-validation** (pending update -- expected to change before April 1, 2026)**:**
>
> * Legal Status `13` (Emergency Commitment) requires WM services only (`01`, `02`, `12`)
> * Legal Status `08` (Involuntary Alcohol/Drug Commitment) requires SUD services only (`03`-`11`)
> * Legal Status `02`-`07`, `09`-`12` requires MH services only (`17`-`22`)

> Both the Legal Status and Service Identifier code lists have been renumbered. The mapping above references the previous numbering and will be updated once the new cross-validation matrix is finalized. ### System Metadata Fields

These fields are required in every submission and track record creation and modification:

### Complete Example with End of Treatment Reason

Discharge with `DISCHARGE_STATUS = 03` (Treatment Not Completed), which triggers the `END_OF_TREATMENT_REASON` conditional requirement.

>
> `END_OF_TREATMENT_REASON = 03` means "Client stopped coming and contact efforts failed." This field is only required when `DISCHARGE_STATUS = 03`.

### Edge Case: Transfer to Another Program

Client transferred to another substance use treatment program (`DISCHARGE_STATUS = 02`).

## 5. Update Semantics

### Primary Key

`RECORD_TYPE` + `BHASO_ADMISSION_IDENTIFIER` (one discharge per admission)

### Transaction Types

| Type | Code | Behavior |

| Add | `A` | Creates discharge record; fails if discharge exists for admission |
| Update | `U` | Updates existing discharge record |
| Replace | `R` | Overwrites discharge record |

### Idempotency

* Only one discharge record per `BHASO_ADMISSION_IDENTIFIER`
* Once discharged, case cannot receive new clinical records
* Re-admission requires new `BHASO_ADMISSION_IDENTIFIER`

> DXD and SID records are filled out when a discharge occurs, but they link directly to the Admission via `BHASO_ADMISSION_IDENTIFIER` — they are not children of the Discharge record.
