Code Table Format

Each code table includes:

Standard Unknown / Declined Codes

Several standard codes recur across many value sets. When a value set supports them, use:
Not every value set includes all five codes. Check the specific reference table for which of these codes are valid. Using a code not listed in the value set will fail validation.

Using Code Tables

Single-Value Fields

For fields that accept a single code value, use the code exactly as shown:

Multi-Value Fields

Some fields accept multiple values separated by semicolon and space (; ):
The delimiter for multi-value fields is semicolon followed by a single space: ;

How Coded Values Work

  • Each coded field in a record spec references an appendix code table.
  • The value stored in the CSV file is the numeric code (e.g., 01), not the description text.
  • Codes are case-sensitive and must match exactly.
  • Leading zeros matter — 01 is not the same as 1 in string-typed fields.
Code values may be added or retired over time. Always check the current version of Appendix A when working with data.
