Overview

The Service Identifier specifies the type of behavioral health service being delivered within an admission. These codes replace the legacy “modality” codes from DACODS. Field format: 9(2) — two-digit numeric string Valid values: 00-80 (see table below for active codes)

All Service Identifiers

Code 00 applies to both SUD and MH contexts. DUI codes (50-53) are pass-through codes for data conversion and are not actively collected by BHASOs.

Service Categories

Withdrawal Management (WM)

Codes 01, 02, 12, 20, and 21 are withdrawal management services.

SUD Services

Codes 03-11 and 54 are substance use disorder treatment services.

Mental Health (MH)

Codes 30-33 are mental health services.

Crisis Services

Codes 40-43 are crisis services.

DUI (Pass-Through)

Codes 50-53 are DUI/MIP pass-through codes retained for backward compatibility and data conversion. BHASOs do not actively submit these.

Co-Occurring

Code 80 is for co-occurring (CIRCLE) treatment.
At discharge, the Legal Status must align with the Service Identifier. The cross-validation mapping between Legal Status and Service Identifier is expected to change before April 1, 2026 to reflect the updated code numbering. See Cross-Tab Dependencies for the current rules.

Usage Example

Service Level Transitions

When a client transitions between service levels:
  1. Discharge from current service
  2. Create new admission with new service identifier
  3. Link via client identifier
A client may have multiple active admissions for different service types (e.g., outpatient therapy + OTP).
Submission timing depends on the service identifier. See Reporting Requirements — Timing of Data Submissions.
